Introduction

When trust in political parties is put to the test, understanding what drives voter support becomes central to the development of democracy and the direction of the election campaign.

Opinion polls show voter support but rarely capture the underlying factors that shape citizens’ trust. Ahead of the 2026 election, this raises the question of which characteristics, leadership factors, and social attitudes actually influence the legitimacy of political parties.

The seminar presents a new survey of the reputation of Swedish political parties and analyzes which factors have the strongest influence on voter support. Using current data and a subsequent discussion, it examines how political parties build or lose trust, how this affects the democratic process, and which factors may be most significant in the final stages of an election.
