The option to work remotely is becoming increasingly important when choosing a job

A good salary is the most important factor for professionals in the technical and commercial fields when choosing a job, according to an employer reputation survey conducted by T-Media. The opportunity to work remotely has emerged as one of the most important selection criteria.

T-Media conducted a survey on work-related values and criteria for choosing an employer from March to May 2023, and a total of 2,700 professionals in the technical and business fields responded to the survey. The top three criteria for choosing a workplace are a good salary, interesting job duties, and a positive work environment.

“During periods of high inflation, the importance of salary levels is emphasized. However, interest in remote work has grown even faster than interest in salary levels, and that interest has not waned since the end of the COVID-19 restrictions,” says Harri Leinikka, CEO of T-Media Oy.

A positive work environment remains strong—the interest in work tasks is losing its significance

In every survey conducted since 2015, about a quarter of respondents have ranked workplace atmosphere among the top three criteria for choosing a job.

“Although the relative importance of the workplace atmosphere has remained the same, it is a critical factor in increasing the appeal of working on-site,” Leinikka says.

In a 2020 survey, the interest of the job was still the most important factor for professionals in the technical and business fields when choosing a job. Now, only about one-third of respondents cite it as one of the three most important factors influencing their choice of job.

In total, respondents were asked about 24 different statements related to choosing a job. Good supervisory work remained in 12th place, but the opportunity to work in a supervisory role is a critical factor in choosing a job for only a few people.

“When considering the important aspects of working life, good supervisory work or good leadership isn’t necessarily viewed as something of intrinsic value in and of itself. So it’s no surprise that in a study like this, the evaluation of good supervisory work itself doesn’t rank at the top,” says Nina Laakso, a senior expert at T-Media.

“The top factors in selection criteria—namely, a good salary, interesting job duties, a positive work environment, the opportunity to work remotely, and the chance to do work that is perceived as meaningful—are, in fact, manifestations of good leadership.”

This is how we conducted the study

T-Media Employer Reputation The goal of the 2023 survey was to identify work-related values and workplace selection criteria among professionals in the technology and business sectors. Data for the survey was collected via an online questionnaire between March 21 and May 10, 2023.

A total of 2,700 people responded to the survey, of whom 1,354 were experts in technical fields and 1,346 in business fields. Of the respondents, 1,685 were college-educated professionals working in these fields, and 1,015 were college students.
