Employer Image Survey: The interest of the work is the most important factor in choosing a job, even more so than salary

A recent employer image survey by T-Media reveals that the most important factor for professionals in the technology and business sectors when choosing a job is the interesting nature of the work. An increasing number of professionals also cite the meaningfulness of the work as one of their top criteria.

An employer image survey conducted annually among T-Media’s technology and business professionals explores work-related values and criteria for choosing an employer.

In this year’s survey, 43 percent of respondents cited the interesting nature of the work as one of their most important criteria for choosing a job. The second most important factor when choosing a job is a good salary. Just a year ago, salary was considered the most important factor. The workplace atmosphere remained the third most important factor.

As the importance of salary levels has declined, the significance of meaningful work as a criterion for choosing a job has risen significantly compared to previous years. Now, a quarter of respondents rank the meaningfulness of work among the top three criteria for choosing a job, whereas last year about a fifth of respondents did so.

Kone received the most mentions as a reputable employer

University students in technical and business fields, as well as recent graduates, were asked to spontaneously name two employers they considered to be particularly reputable. Over 5,000 responses were received, distributed among more than 900 different companies.

The elevator and escalator company Kone received the most spontaneous mentions for its good reputation. The ten companies spontaneously named as having a good reputation, listed in order of the number of mentions, are Kone, Neste, Supercell, OP, Vincit, ABB, Reaktor, UPM, Finnair, and Google.

A total of 2,956 people responded to the survey, of whom 1,724 were professionals in the technical field and 1,232 in the business field. Of the respondents, 1,750 were university-educated professionals currently in the workforce, and 1,206 were university students.

Conducting the 2020 Employer Image Survey

The research data was collected via an online survey between April 16 and June 1, 2020, in collaboration with the Finnish Business School Graduates – the Finnish Association of Business School Graduates, the Association of Business School Graduates (TRAL), the Union of Professional Engineers (IL), the Academic Engineers and Architects in Finland (TEK), Oikotie Jobs, as well as universities and student and alumni organizations of higher education institutions. In addition, a sample was drawn from T-Media’s own research database.
