Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!
This post is currently available in Finnish. Please see the original post here. The hottest topic in the world of work right now revolves around new, flexible forms of work and light entrepreneurship. A dramatic shift occurred at the end of April when the Finnish Centre for Pensions announced that self-employed individuals would henceforth be treated as entrepreneurs. This caused concern, especially among employees who cannot or do not want to become entrepreneurs.
It was launched a couple of weeks ago #Duuericampaign was launched, offering an easy and ethical solution to the same problem. The campaign features SuoraTyo.fiand Oikotie Keikkatyöt , Etera, Fennia and Lenovo – as well as T-Media as a research and marketing partner.
The Suoratyö.fi and Oikotie Keikkatyöt websites provide a platform for connecting workers with employers. Gig workers who use these services do not have to become self-employed; instead, they can remain an employee if they wish. Nevertheless, they are covered by appropriate unemployment and social security benefits and continue to accrue pension.
#The business model for those starting a business as a Duuer is therefore fundamentally different from that of light entrepreneurs. Anyone who has tried their hand at entrepreneurship knows that the temptation to pay only the minimum pension into their own account is strong. A solution that allows employees to remain employees even in flexible work arrangements is most welcome.
Solutions are needed because Finland’s success in the global market is at stake. There is no single magic formula for improving competitiveness; instead, we must succeed in this race by using every means at our disposal.
The importance of work was also emphasized by one of the speakers at the launch event for the #duueri campaign, Member of Parliament Juhana Vartiainen (National Coalition Party).
“As a nation, we have the potential to contribute much more than we currently do,” Vartiainen said in his remarks.
He based his assessment on the idea that new platform solutions would make it possible to better meet the needs of both buyers and providers of gig work.
“This could be a truly significant trend for the well-being of Finns,” Vartiainen said.
Models for regulating the workplace have their roots in the era of factory and agricultural work. Many people wonder whether these same models are still suitable for professional and intellectual work. This issue was also discussed by SAK President Jarkko Eloranta, who spoke at the event and is interested in bringing new forms of work under the scope of society’s rules and social security.
“What happens if work is distributed across platforms whose owners are based outside Finland?” Eloranta asked at the #duuer launch event. “This is an issue for society as a whole.”
The #Duueri campaign challenges Finnish companies and households to provide one week’s worth of additional work per year. If successful, this would inject half a billion euros into the Finnish economy annually. This half a billion euros would almost entirely cover the annual salaries of all qualified elementary school teachers in our country.
The specific goal of the #Duueri campaign is to generate 5,000,000 hours of work this year. We at T-Media are honored to be part of this socially significant campaign.
There's work to be done. So let's roll up our sleeves and get to it!
